Ellen Thompson

Ellen has 20 years of experience conceptualizing, growing and managing technology-based start-up companies.

Ellen is the Co-Founder of 4 Walls Inc., which has helped companies use social media and other Internet marketing tools to attract and retain customers since 2002. Under her leadership, 4 Walls has been named to the Philadelphia 100 list of fastest-growing companies five times; honored as one of Philadelphia’s best places to work by both Philadelphia Magazine and the Philadelphia Business Journal (PBJ); and was a finalist for the Best Management Team “Benny” award, given to emerging businesses in the Philadelphia area. 4 Walls was also recognized as a “Social Media Star” by PBJ for its Respage social media product.

Ellen was previously the CEO of Know It All, a leading skills testing company, which she started in 1993 and sold in 2000. Know It All was the recipient of two rounds Ben Franklin Technology Partners (BFTP) funding; appeared twice in the Philadelphia 100 and ranked 168th in the Fast 500, Deloitte and Touche’s national ranking of the 500 fastest growing tech companies.

Ellen has been honored as one of Pennsylvania’s Best Women in Business and has appeared on the Philadelphia Business Journal’s “40 Under 40 list.” In 2010 she was inducted into the Philadelphia 100 Hall of Fame.

Ellen is an active member of the Philadelphia tech start up and multifamily communities. She performs due diligence reviews for Ben Franklin Technology Partners investments and has mentored two DreamIt Ventures start up teams. An active member of the Apartment Association of Greater Philadelphia, she currently is chair of the PAC committee and has been recognized as Vendor of the Year.

Ellen has a B. S. in Economics from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. She lives in Penn Valley, PA with her husband and son. In her spare time, she likes to play tennis and figure skate.

Jackie Koehler

Jackie Koehler has been Director of Operations with 4 Walls Inc. since 2003. Prior to joining 4 Walls, Jackie served as Director of Operations with Venue Tech Systems at Philadelphia’s Wachovia Center, where she was responsible for managing sales, marketing, and facility relationships for the arena’s wireless point of sale binocular system.

Previously, Jackie was Director of Sales & Marketing at Know It All, Inc. Partnering with Ellen Thompson, Jackie helped grow Know It All from a small startup to the country’s leading skills assessment software company. Jackie was responsible for $4 million in annual revenue and for the acquisition of over 5000 clients, including five of the top ten staffing companies in the country.

Following Know It All’s acquisition by Kenexa in March 2000, Jackie became the Director of Operations for the company’s Philadelphia office, which employed over 100 staff members. She was responsible for managing the facility and IT infrastructure, as well as implementing an enterprise-wide customer relationship management system.

Jackie has a B.A. in Psychology and Business from Washington University in St. Louis. She received her Masters of Business Administration from Temple University in 2001. She lives in the Philadelphia suburbs with her husband and two young children.

Lawrence E. Portnoff

Larry co-founded 4 Walls Inc. with Ellen Thompson in 2002. Since then he’s served as Chief Financial Officer and shared responsibility for strategic planning and marketing.

In 1989 Larry founded Integrated Financial Resources Inc., a financial advisory firm. He’s a registered financial adviser and certified public accountant licensed in Pennsylvania, and a member in good standing of the following professional organizations:

Larry holds a B.A. in Religion from Reed College in Portland, OR, and a M.S. in Accounting from Northeastern University in Boston.
